Baba Kuhi Bakuvi - sufi whose grave lightens the mountain

An article ‘Baba Kuhi Bakuvi  - sufi whose grave lightens the mountain’ by Elmin Nuri, a journalist was published in the Friday, July 9th, 2016 issue of the Aydin Yol Newspaper of the Translation Centre under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic.

The article deals with Baba Kuhi Bakuvi, a prominent Sufi poet of the X-XI century, about his mode of life full of miraclesç and his creative work – source of Irfan. Baba Kuhi Bakuvi played a very special role in development of the Sufism theory. Prominent Azerbaijani scholar, traveller, poet Baba Kuhi Bakuvi was a distinguished man of his time.

Baba Kuhi Bakuvi spent the last years of his life in the caves near Shiraz. He used to pray there and never visited any place. He created his main works there, too. The fame of the hermit-scholar spread to the whole Orient. People from everywhere paid visits to him to get his advice. The author talked about how the mountain where Bakuvi had lived and died became a place for pilgrimage.

It should be noted that Bakuvi’s grave in the mountain near Shiraz has mystical powers. It is said that just before Baba Kuhi died, he had made a famous promise that if anyone could stay awake for forty consecutive nights at his tomb, that person would be granted the gift of poetry, immortality, and his heart's desire. So, the great poet of the East Hafiz Shirazi visited the grave and his poetic talent became apparent then. Besides, the daughter of Shirvanshah found ease of body and mind there and lived near the grave to her death. Mystical powers of this sufist grave were proved by these facts.

The author talked about Baba Kuhi’s works.  Philosophical thoughts with strong sense in Kuhi’s Divan and in his other philosophical materials are very strong. The author gave examples of heavenly wisdom and tried to explain  some secret symbols and esoteric moments characteristic for Sufism:

‘There’s no complexity in spirits. Everybody knows that they sprang up from soil. When Kuhi removed his heart from his body, he fell into a huge ocean.’

This thought reflects principal propositions of the philosophical conception - the unity of body. So, the formula ‘a human being alike a drop separated from the ocean is particles torn away from heavenly body’ in the unity of body is the aim of this theory. Kuhi made a nice point of it as well. As the drops usually return to the ocean in the end, human being also returns to his origin.’

For the author, researchers, scientists didn’t conduct a deep research of Baba Kuhi Bakuvi’s literary activity. He stated the names of researcher-scientists of Baba Kuhi Bakuvi’s literary activity: Solmaz Rzaguluzadeh, Zakir Mammadov, Masiagha Mammadli and Sanan Ibrahimov.
